The investigation reaches its dangerous conclusion as Mauser and Ms. Tree find themselves in the crosshairs of the very people they set out to expose. Collins ratchets the tension with the efficiency of a seasoned thriller novelist, and the interplay between the two leads — their mutual suspicion, begrudging respect, and clashing methods — gives the story a charged dynamic that elevates it well above a standard detective yarn. Terry Beatty's clean, expressive linework handles both the quiet character moments and the hard-edged confrontations with equal confidence. As the concluding issue of this short but memorable two-part crossover, this is the essential companion to issue #1 — and in any condition, a genuine find for fans of Max Allan Collins or classic indie crime comics.
