Phil Foglio
Story: "Bagatelle"
Writer: Phil Foglio, Pencils: Hilary Barta, Inks: John Nyberg, Colors: Rick Taylor
Bag people. Aliens. Flying saucers. Central Park. Superman. Phil Foglio — the Hugo Award-winning cartoonist behind Girl Genius and one of the most naturally gifted comedic artists in the medium — brings his distinctive rubbery exuberance to Eel O'Brian's post-Crisis revival. This four-issue limited series is beloved by fans for understanding something many Plastic Man writers miss: the character works best when the comedy is built directly into the visual storytelling, not just the script. Foglio's panel compositions stretch and squash with the same gleeful elasticity as the hero himself, and issue #4's climactic confrontation — which pushes Plastic Man's powers to their most absurdly literal limits — is a masterclass in superhero slapstick. A fun, smartly crafted and underappreciated DC gem.
36 pages, Cover Price $1.00.
